The Boston Red Sox have landed one of the prized free agents of this offseason, reportedly signing two-time All-Star infielder Trevor Story to a six-year, $140 million deal.
The signing was first reported by USA Today Sunday morning, with MLB.com and ESPN.com also confirming the signing.
The 29-year-old shortstop also won two Silver Slugger awards during his time with the Colorado Rockies. Story is also considered an elite base runner and one of the league’s better shortstops, although he will likely move to second base in Boston to play next to Red Sox All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts.
He also could move back to shortstop next year if Bogaerts exercises his opt-out clause in 2023. Story’s contract reportedly includes his own opt-out clause after the fourth season.
In his six seasons, the right-handed Story is a career .272 hitter with an on-base percentage of .340, a slugging percentage of .523 and an OPS of .863. He has 158 career home runs, 450 RBIs and 100 stolen bases.
Story had a bit of a down year in 2021, hampered by an early-season trip to the injured list with inflammation in his right elbow. He also battled inflammation in the same elbow in 2018 as well.
Story reportedly could report to the team as soon as today.
