KENT, OHIO- Kent State wrestlers Kody Komara and Colin McCracken are set for the 2022 NCAA National Wrestling Championships this week in Detroit, Michigan.
The Championships start on Thursday afternoon and run through Saturday night’s championship rounds. Komara earned his trip to Detroit by winning the Mid-American Conference tournament at 149 pounds and is seeded 28th. McCracken earned a “true second” at 184 pounds and is seeded 32nd.
Komara is 16-11 this year and went 3-0 at the MAC Championships en route to the title. He avenged an earlier season loss to Marcus Robinson of Cleveland State by securing a second-round fall in the championship match to claim his first MAC title. Interestingly enough, Robinson is in the bracket opposite Komara and the two could meet for a third time in the second match of the day.
He is matched up against 5th-seeded Kyle Parco of Arizona State. Parco is the 149-pound champion in the PAC-12 and comes in with a record of 21-1. He’s a transfer from Fresno State where he was an All-American after finishing sixth at the 2021 NCAA championships.
McCracken is 15-9 this season and went 3-1 at the MAC Championships, defeating Kyle Davis of George Mason in the “true second” bout. That secured McCracken a second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships. Few wrestlers come in hotter than McCracken who is 10-1 in his last 11 bouts.
His opponent will be Jack Jessen of Northwestern who is 3-11 on the season and placed 11th at the Big-10 Championships. Jessen went 1-3 in the Big-10 tournament but did pick up a victory by fall over Donnell Washington of Indiana to secure his place in the national tournament. The winner of Jessen and McCracken will face top-seeded Myles Amine of Michigan.
ESPN 3 will be covering the opening rounds of the NCAA Championship with Thursday’s opening rounds starting at noon. The world-wide leader will have streams for each mat available. Thursday will be a busy day in the tournament as the first two rounds are scheduled for morning and evening sessions.
Track Wrestling also has live stats for the entire tournament and will help determine what mat the Kent State wrestlers will compete on in the opening round. All links are available on the wrestling schedule page.
