PARKERSBURG — Former Parkersburg South wrestlers Brayden Roberts and Braxton Amos are staying busy in the offseason.
Roberts, who wrestles for West Virginia University, is currently in Geneva, Ohio competing in the United World Wrestling U20 Greco-Roman and Freestyle World Team Trials.
On Friday, the Mountaineer had his run in the 72kg Greco portion of the tournament come to a close. Roberts was upended 13-4 by Ashton Miess in the semifinals and suffered a 3-2 defeat in the consolation semifinals to Kaden Reetz.
Now, Roberts will compete in the U23 freestyle bracket at 70kg. If he win his bracket, the ex-Patriot will represent the United States on Oct. 17-23 in the U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.
Amos, a Wisconsin Badger, finished 4-0 last month during the 97kg Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Coralville, Iowa.
Thanks to the victory, Amos is now set to wrestle on Wednesday inside New York’s Madison Square Garden against world bronze medalist G’Angelo Hancock in Final X, which is a best-of-three matchup.
Amos, who is the reigning Junior World Champion in the same weight class for Greco-Roman, qualified as a freshman for the Badgers in the NCAA championsihps at 197 pounds.
The two-time Robert Dutton Award winner already has qualified to represent the United States in the U23 World Championships in Spain thanks to his win at the Senior Level Challenge Tournament. However, Amos has yet to accept the spot on the U23 team because of the timing for the start of his sophomore season at Wisconsin.
Final X will be streamed on Flowrestling starting with the first match at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Match two, and if necessary match three, will get underway at 6 p.m. The winner will represent the United States on Sept. 10-18 in Belgrade, Serbia.
