SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb heavyweight Peyton McComas was named to the Southern Conference Wrestling All-Freshman Team on Thursday afternoon, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
McComas (Grundy, Va. / Grundy HS) was the lone heavyweight on the 10-man team.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder won 11 matches during his debut season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, helping head coach Daniel Elliott‘s squad to a 5-2 record in the SoCon. McComas went 4-3 in his league bouts and led Gardner-Webb with three pins this season. He added three major decisions and one tech fall.
McComas ranked third on the team in overall wins and finished tied for second on the roster in Southern Conference wins.
He is seeded fifth for the 2022 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships, which begin on Saturday in Boone, N.C.
McComas was a standout at Grundy (Va.) High before enrolling at Gardner-Webb. He was a two-time state champion in Virginia and led the program to its 24th state team title last season as a senior. He went a perfect 6-0 in the postseason as a senior, winning five of those bouts with a pin. Three of those pins came in less than a minute of action, with one coming in a quick 12 seconds.
