CLEVELAND – Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) of the Northern Illinois University wrestling team was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the week announced by the league office on Wednesday (March 9).
Kauffman won his first career conference title last weekend at the MAC Wrestling Championships, earning his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. The redshirt senior won the 174-pound conference crown with a 7-5 victory over Ohio’s Sam Perrine in the championship match. Kauffman was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend to improve to 21-9 overall this season.
A biological sciences major with a 4.0 grade point average; last season Kauffman was the recipient of the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and earned CoSIDA Academic All-American recognition.
Kauffman and the Huskies will head to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., for the NCAA Championships beginning next Thursday, March 17.
