Myles Amine of Brighton still has an opportunity to win a bronze medal in the Summer Olympic Games after losing his quarterfinal match to David Taylor of the United States.
Amine, competing for San Marino, scored the first two points of the 86-kilogram freestyle match against Taylor before losing by technical superiority, 12-2, with 2:05 remaining.
Because Taylor advanced to the championship match, Amine got the opportunity to wrestle back for the bronze. He is scheduled to wrestle Ali Shabanau of Belarus Thursday morning in Japan, with the winner taking on Deepak Punia of India for a bronze medal. Wrestling awards two bronze medals.
Punia lost 10-0 in the semifinals to Taylor, the 2018 world champion.
Amine, a flag bearer for San Marino at the opening ceremonies, won his opening match over Colombian Carlos Arturo Izquierdo Mendez, 12-2.
Amine was born in Dearborn and raised in Livingston County, attending high school at Detroit Catholic Central before going on to become a three-time All-American at the University of Michigan.

He has dual citizenship because his mother’s grandfather came to the United States from San Marino in the early 1900s. San Marino is a small nation contained entirely within the borders of Italy.
Myles and Malik Amine began competing for San Marino in 2019 at the European Championships with an eye toward qualifying for the Olympics. They were the first two wrestlers to represent San Marino at the European Championships.
Myles qualified in September 2019 by placing fifth at the World Championships. He needed to reach the semifinals or place in the top six to qualify.
