Oklahoma State redshirt sophomore Daton Fix went 1-1 at 57 kilograms in men’s freestyle at the United World Wrestling Championships on Thursday in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
Fix opened the tournament with a 12-1 technical superiority victory over 2019 European bronze medalist Vladimir Egorov of North Macedonia. The Cowboy scored three takedowns in each period.
Fix then fell 4-2 in the second round to 2017 World champion Yuki Takahashi of Japan. Takahashi held a 1-0 lead at the break after Fix was unable to score while on the shot clock. Fix took a 2-1 lead with a takedown right way in the second, then was put on the shot clock again and couldn’t score but maintained the lead on criteria.
In the final minute of the bout, Takahashi forced the action and received a step out point with 16 seconds remaining but the camera angle didn’t show Fix’s right foot dragging out of bounds. Fix’s corner challenged the call and after a lengthy video review, the challenge was denied, giving Takahashi his final point.
Kumar Ravi of India defeated Takahashi 6-1 to make Fix ineligible for repechage since the Cowboy didn’t lose to a gold-medal finalist.
Fix has said he’d wait until after Worlds to make his decision on whether he’ll take an Olympic redshirt to train in advance of the 2020 Olympic Trials, which will be April 4-5 at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center in State College.
