For the 21-year-old Steveson, whose full name is Gable Dan Steveson in honor of 1972 gold medalist Dan Gable, the future became the present in a dizzying back-and-forth match with Geno Petriashvili of Georgia.
Steveson opened with a patient approach and forced Petriashvili onto the 30-second shot clock. Just as the clock expired, giving Steveson a 1-0 lead, he took down the 2016 bronze medalist and three-time world champion and soon after forced a step-out for a 4-0 lead. The Georgian battled back with a takedown, but Steveson got a reversal to keep a 5-2 lead.
In the second period, Petriashvili took control, taking down the young American and rolling him back and forth to take an 8-5 lead.
Steveson got a late takedown to get within one point and give himself a chance to win it with in the final seconds. He landed a takedown right at the buzzer. Georgia challenged the decision, but upon review, officials not only upheld the takedown but awarded an extra point for a 10-8 final.
After the review, the University of Minnesota wrestler pounded the mat and later celebrated with a backflip.
