OSLO – Former Gopher and Greco-Roman World Team member Pat Smith is set to make his third run at a world medal at 72 kilograms, as the 2021 Senior World Championships kicked off in Norway on Saturday morning.
Smith earned his spot on the United States World Team last month by winning the Senior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Neb., sweeping Benjamin Peak of New York Athletic Club in the best-of-three finals. It will be Smith’s third World Championships, previously competing in the 2017 and 2019 World Championships. He will be looking for his first appearance on the podium this time around in Oslo.
While the World Championships have already begun on Saturday morning, the 72-kilogram Greco-Roman weight class is not slated to begin competition until Thursday, October 7. The Greco-Roman draws are yet to be announced by United World Wrestling.
