DURHAM – Duke wrestling assistant coach Ethan Ramos will continue his wrestling career and compete at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo, Norway. The annual championships will run from Oct. 2-10.
Ramos is one of 29 accepted wrestlers into the 86kg draw, where he will represent Puerto Rico. The weight class will feature wrestlers from 28 countries from all over the world, who will have their first opportunity at a world title following the 2020 event’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s hard to answer because when I go out to wrestle, I go out to represent God and I think that helps how I represent my family, the university and my country,” Ramos said. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to wrestle for Puerto Rico. I’m proud to be Puerto Rican and I’m excited to elevate Puerto Rican wrestling through how I perform and conduct myself out there on the mat.”
Ramos joined the Blue Devils this month as a first time collegiate assistant coach, following a decorated collegiate career as a wrestler at North Carolina from 2013-18. Ramos was a two-time ACC Champion at 174 pounds and a 2015 All-American during his time with the Tar Heels.
“I’m really grateful that the staff desires that I compete and am at my best, while supporting me,” said Ramos. “I’m really excited to grow Duke wrestling and I think wrestling my best at these kind of events helps me do that.”
Prior to joining the Blue Devils, Ramos worked as a resident athlete with the Scarlet Knight Wrestling Club, training wrestlers four times a week while maintaining physical shape to continue wrestling with Team Puerto Rico.
Qualification rounds will begin on Oct. 2 at 4:30 a.m. ET (10:30 a.m. in Oslo). The championships will be shown on FloWrestling.
