Romeo freestyle wrestlers Amarisa Manuel and Mishell Rebisch will represent the US in international competition this summer.
Manuel finished first in her weight class and Rebisch was a runner-up at the USA Wrestling Women’s World Team Trials (U-17 Cadet) at Fort Worth, Texas, May 6-8.
Manuel defeated Piper Fowler of Tennessee in the best-of-three finals at 73 kilograms. A sophomore at Romeo, Manuel won the first match by superior technical fall 11-1 and the third by decision 10-7.
Manuel started the tournament with a pin (1:40) against Kaiulani Garcia of California; defeated Olivia Stean of Kansas by pin (1:13) in the quarterfinals, and Naomi Simon of Iowa by pin (1:52) in the semifinals.
Rebisch lost in the finals at 69 kilograms. Jasmine Robinson of Texas posted an 8-3 decision and a pin in 1:04 against Rebisch.
Rebisch, a Romeo sophomore, started with an 11-0 superior technical fall over Haykkee Lavallee of Texas. She then defeated Sage Rosario of Kansas by superior technical fall 11-1; Avery Beckman of Texas by pin (1:19), and Anya Hatch of Utah by pin (2:41) to reach the final.
Manuel will represent the US at the Cadet World Championships in Rome July 25-31, and Rebisch will do likewise at the Cadet Pan-American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 24-26
Rebisch won the state high school girls championship at 145 pounds in March. Manuel finished second at 155.
