GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech freshman Tom Crook has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week of the 2022-23 season following an impressive collegiate debut at last weekend’s Southeast Open in Salem, Virginia.
Crook, a 141-pound native of Tampa, Florida, took the gold medal in his weight class, navigating his way through an impressive field.
Following a 12-1 major decision over Appalachian State’s Isaac Byers, Crook knocked off NCAA qualifier Matt Kazimir of Columbia (currently No. 10, InterMat) and Canadian Senior World team member Lachlan McNeil (No. 20, InterMat) of North Carolina en route to the finals. Crook edged Kazimir by a 3-1 score and outlasted McNeil for a 3-2 decision.
Crook then capped off his first Southeast Open with a 7-3 win over Virginia’s Dylan Cedeno (No. 29 FloWrestling) to take home the title.
Virginia Tech, ranked No. 11 by InterMat in the preseason, opens its dual season in grand style when it travels to face No. 6 Ohio State this Friday night at 7 p.m. in Columbus.
