National champion sure has a nice ring to it.
Iowa State’s David Carr earned that illustrious title Saturday in the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships, defeating Rider’s Jesse Dellavecchia at 157 pounds.
Celebrating his win, Carr cartwheeling on the mat and appeared to gear up for a backflip, but Iowa State assistant coach and former Iowa Hawkeye wrestling great Brent Metcalf tackled him in celebration.

“I tried to do a cartwheel-backflip, but not on his watch,” Carr laughed. “First off, I want to say all glory to God. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to do it. All glory to Him.
Carr touched on the influence his father, three-time NCAA Champion Nate Carr, has on him.
“It’s been amazing,” he said. “I’m just happy to be father-son national champs. It sounds good. I just want some gummy bears.”
