BOONE, N.C. — App State will wrestle in Varsity Gym for the first time this season when it hosts the Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. and will continue into the afternoon. Weigh-ins are scheduled for 7 a.m. that day, with doors opening to fans at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available through FloArena.
Tickets, which are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, can be purchased at the Rivers Street entrance to Varsity Gym or online by clicking HERE.
There will be Invitational and Open brackets for the 10 weight classes. Wrestlers from App State, Stanford, Virginia, Air Force, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, Ohio and Kent State are slated to compete.
The 149-pound bracket will include three of the nation’s top 25 wrestlers in that weight class: No. 3 Jon Jon Millner (App State), No. 11 Jadan Abas (Stanford), No. 21 Jarod Verkleeren (Virginia) and No. 22 Kody Kamara (Kent State).
The 165-pound entries include 2021 national champion Shane Griffith (Stanford, currently ranked No. 2), No. 8 Justin McCoy (Virginia) and No. 13 Will Formato (App State).
App State is No. 19 in FloWrestling’s national tournament rankings, helped by top-25 individual rankings from Millner, Formato, Caleb Smith (No. 8 at 125), Sean Carter (No. 14 at 133) and Cody Bond (No. 21 at 157).
Carter, who posted an overtime win against 11th-ranked Kai Orine from NC State to open the dual season, was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Week. He earned an overtime win against a returning NCAA qualifier from a top-10 Wolfpack team for the second straight year.
The Mountaineer Invitational will have full wrestlebacks this year, a new feature for 2022.
