Amidst the internal controversies, WFI has named a strong squad for the first tournament of the calendar year.
Zagreb Open Ranking Series is set to begin on 1 February in Zagreb, Croatia which will be the first wrestling tournament of the 2023 season. A total of 600 wrestlers are set to take part across three styles (freestyle, women, and Greco-Roman). India has named a strong contingent with the likes of Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya set to take part along with 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat.
New Olympic weight categories
Let’s first take a look at the weight categories of the wrestlers who will be competing in the Paris Olympics 2024.
Women – 50kg, 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, 68kg and 76kg
Freestyle – 57kg, 65kg, 74kg, 86kg, 97kg and 125kg.
Greco-Roman – 60kg, 67kg, 77kg, 87kg, 97kg and 130kg.
Many wrestlers will be shifting to the Olympic weight categories as the Paris Olympic qualification cycle is set to begin from the fag end of the 2023 season.
